Our Dexter Cattle
|
|
Why
we have Dexter cattle We have a small farm (about 60 acres),
and much of it is too rugged to be used for pasturing cattle. Also, we wanted a breed that was small, gentle, and good
for both milk and meat. Dexters are the perfect fit for our farm. Dexters do
not require as much pasture per animal as the larger breeds. This is important for us, because we rely on
grass alone to feed and finish our cattle. There are important health benefits to this grass-only approach. Managing our Dexter herd is very much a family affair. Our Dexters are gentle, friendly animals, and their
small size makes them easy to work with. Our cows calve easily and are wonderful mothers. Our bull,
Star Dancer, is as gentle and friendly as can be.

Some
details about our Dexters We like our herd sire, Star Dancer, because of his excellent
conformation and the fact that he sires calves of moderate size. We prefer moderate sized Dexters over the
larger or smaller ones. He is a beautiful red color, and has a wonderful disposition. We
have both red and black cows. Some are horned and some are polled. They calve easily and are excellent mothers. We are around our Dexters every day, so they are very friendly and easy to work with. Our calves get very
excited around our children and love to play.

Dexters
for Sale It is hard to sell animals that you have seen born and raised, that
you have worked with and gotten to know. But to keep things managable, and not abuse our land, we have to sell
some of our cattle to others. We usually have a small number of heifer and bull calves
available, and we also sell bred cows from time to time. Both red and black are available. Feel
free to contact us regarding what Dexters we have available. Also, you may want to consider visiting our farm, look
at our animals, and see how we manage things. Please go to our Home page for contact information.
